The Department of Chemistry had a humble beginning in 1950 with pre-degree classes affiliated to the University of Kerala. The Department had a systematic growth as evidenced from the fact that B.Sc Chemistry course was launched in 1957 with physics and mathematics as subsidiary subjects and M.Sc Chemistry was started in 1964. The department was one of the first departments to be recognized as DST-FIST sponsored department. Department has well-equipped labs for UG and PG courses. The department has four laboratories with well equipped instruments. The department library has about 700 volumes of advanced books with both lending and reference options to students in addition to the books in the general library. Well-equipped computer Lab with internet facilities is functioning in the department.
The department acknowledges the services and contributions of all its retired/transferred teachers and non-teaching staff who in their various positions as HOD /faculty member/ staff members promoted the development of the department. The department has 10 faculty members and 2 laboratory staff members. All faculty members of the department have research degrees from reputed universities and institutions. Out of 10 faculty members 3 are research guides. Every member in the department is dedicated to the development of the department as well as the college. The Students of the Department secured top ranks in both UG and PG Chemistry at the University level examinations. There are about 200 students studying chemistry at the UG and PG levels. The department library has about 700 volumes of advanced books with both lending and reference options to students in addition to the books in the general library. The department has four laboratories with well equipped instruments. We provide our students with excellent, comprehensive education of the principles of chemistry, including rich laboratory experience within the curriculum. The faculty of chemistry has also undertaken initiatives such as GATE and UGC-NET coaching to promote students to pursue higher education. Special attention is given to weak students by providing remedial coaching. The department also offers Add On course in Instrumental Methods in Analytical Chemistry. Assessment of water quality, Detection of food adulteration, Chemistry Laboratory Awareness Programme (CLAP) and Chemistry Association for Rehabilitation and Enhancement (CARE) are the extension activities that are being carried out in the department which benefits the society. Department has MoU with academic institution and industrial firm.
Seminars, literary activities, workshops and exhibitions are frequently arranged by the department. The students of the department have achieved campus placement in reputed firms. A registered alumni association with distinguished personalities as its members is effectively functioning. Our alumni occupy esteemed positions like academicians, scientists, administrators, professors, etc. in India and abroad. Dr. V.N. Rajasekharan Pillai (Vice Chancellor, IGNOU and formal chairman, UGC), is the distinguished alumni of the department. The alumni association and the teaching faculty of the department help the students both by providing merit scholarships and educational supports.
