The Department of Chemistry was established in 1950. The Undergraduate course started in 1957 and the Post Graduate course in 1964. The department is DST – FIST supported, having a faculty of eleven teachers possessing doctoral degrees or are pursuing for their Ph.D. degree. There is a well-equipped learning centre with more than one thousand books and journals dealing with various disciplines in chemistry. Department has well-equipped labs for UG and PG courses. The department has a research lab with advanced facilities like Gouy balance, UV-Vis and Raman spectrophotometers to help the research students of the college as well as that of other institutions. Well-equipped computer Lab with internet facilities is functioning in the department. Value added programmes for UG and PG courses are also being conducted. The teaching faculty is engaged in carrying out research projects which are aided by different funding agencies and also as a part of PG syllabus. Assessment of water quality, detection of food adulteration, determination of dried rubber content and Chemistry Laboratory Awareness Programme (CLAP) are the extension activities that are being carried out in the department which benefits the society. Department is having a MoU with Adoor Rubber Producing Society for the treatment of waste water produced after coagulation of rubber. Seminars, literary activities, workshops and exhibitions are frequently arranged by the department. The students of the department have achieved campus placement in reputed firms. The success rate of students in university examinations is above 80 percent for UG and above 95 percent for PG. Two of our students qualified the CSIR-NET examinations in last two years. A registered alumni association with distinguished personalities as its members is effectively functioning. Dr. V.N. Rajasekharan Pillai (Vice Chancellor, IGNOU and formal chairman, UGC) is the distinguished alumni of the department. The alumni association and the teaching faculty of the department help the students both by providing merit scholarships and educational supports. Dr.P.K.Sreekumar is an Academic Council member, University of Kerala. Dr. Jeena V.R. and Dr.Sudheesh N. are members of Board of Studies, MG University, Kerala.
