Upholding the cultural heritage of India, the department of Sanskrit came into existence in 1981. Dr. K. P. Kesavan Nampoothiri was the founder professor and Head of the Department .The Department offers Degree programme in Sanskrit General with Sanskrit complementary and Indian Literary Criticism as an open course. In addition to the above courses, Sanskrit is also offered as Additional language for B.A/B.Sc/B.Com Degree programmes, complementary course for BA Malayalam and open course for V Semester students.

The Department library contains about 1000 Sanskrit books including dictionaries and reference books. Journals are also available in the department library. We subscribe three journals in the department ie, Sukritindra oriental Research journal and Vijnana-Kairali. We are conducting spoken Sanskrit courses every year with the support of Rastriya Sanskrit Sansthan as a premier step to study Sanskrit easily. With the active support of the faculty, Department has produced excellent results in Kerala University including First and Second ranks. Cent percent results are obtained almost all years except a few. University rank holders of the department are Arshaja S. (3rd rank), Sreelekshmi S. (1st rank), Remya Krishnan (2nd rank), Raji S. (3rd rank), Aiswarya S. (3rd rank), Silpa S. Prasad (1st rank), Soumya S. (2nd rank), Arya S.Vijayan (1st rank), Aiswarya R. (2nd rank), Surya Surendran (3rd rank), Kavya Madhu (1st rank), Sruthy S. (2nd rank), Susmitha S. (3rd rank), Haripriya S. (1st rank), & Vidya Satheesh (2nd rank) in the academic period 2009-2018.

We have an active Alumni Association. Most of our students join for Post Graduate and research studies in various Universities and Colleges. Our Alumni includes many Ph.D. holders and they are working as Assistant Professors and Associate Professors in various colleges and Universities. Our students have been selected for Sanskrit scholarships of Sree Sankaracharya Sanskrit University Kalady and Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan, New Delhi.

Monthly Department meetings are regularly held to evaluate the academic and non- academic matters of students. Parents, Teachers and Students meetings are also conducted in every semester. The opinions and suggestions of parents are incorporated for the efficient functioning of the Department. A tutorial system is introduced with separate teachers as Faculty Advisors for each class. Most of the students actively participate in this meeting and creative suggestions are proposed for their academic improvements. Out of the four faculty members, three belong to the alumni of our department.
