The scheme was launched in Mahatma Gandhi’s centenary year 1969 aimed at developing student’s personality through community service. The cardinal principles of N.S.S. Program is that it is organized by the students themselves, and both the students and teachers through their combined participation in community service, get a sense of involvement in the talks of nation building.

The National Service Scheme (NSS) stands as a leading initiative by the Government of India under the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, designed to actively engage students from diverse educational backgrounds in impactful community service activities. From secondary schools to technical institutions and higher education establishments, the NSS offers a robust platform for young individuals to contribute meaningfully to societal betterment. Since its inception in 1969, the NSS has experienced unprecedented growth in participation, with millions of students actively involved in diverse community service programs nationwide. The NSS aims to instill values of empathy, responsibility, and civic engagement among the youth, nurturing future leaders dedicated to driving social change.
The National Service Scheme Units (42 A & 42 B) of NSS College, Pandalam takes on a multifaceted approach to community engagement, emphasizing not only rendering service to society but also creating cultural awareness and national pride. By participating in diverse community service initiatives, students gain practical skills, develop leadership qualities, and cultivate a strong sense of social responsibility.
The National Service Scheme of NSS College Pandalam consists of 2 units, 42A and 42B. A hundred students are enrolled every year as volunteers. There is an advisory committee under the chairmanship of the College Principal to advise on programme/ planning and development.`On review of this advisory committee, the N.S.S. gives importance to environmental protection, the adoption of villages/ slums/communities, and various outreach activities. Residential Camps are organized annually, the stakeholders being the second-year volunteers. Environment-friendly practices such as water conservation and rainwater harvesting are followed annually. The Red Ribbon Club of the Unit organizes Blood Donation Camps and focuses on donating blood to the needy by channelling the volunteers. They also organize sessions to create awareness of AIDS. The volunteers take part in various outreach programs such as Food Donation Initiatives, named Paadheyam, Punyam Poonkavanam, an initiative to assist the pilgrims during Sabarimala season, Vimukthi, to create awareness against Drugs and various Substance Abuses and Sanjeevani to promote organ donation .
