The Department of Botany was established in June, 1955 and was upgraded to a Post Graduate Department in the year 1982. In 2019, the department was recognized as an approved Research Centre of the University of Kerala. The Department consists of five permanent and two guest faculties. The faculty has been successful in blending first hand research with teaching and this has helped the Department to perform well on all indicators over the years. In the past years, the faculty has produced various research papers in national and international journals besides their contribution to various books and magazines in the form of chapters and articles. The Department also offers plant identification and authentication for research scholars. As a testimony to its good practices, the Department has been able to produce excellent results in University exams. The Department bagged first rank in the BSc. exams of 1963, 1964, 2004 and 2022. We also secured the First rank in the MSc. exams of 2007 & 2015. Our students have also been able to qualify competitive exams like JRF-NET of CSIR/UGC and have also been a part of research institutions within and outside the country. It has been heartening to notice that our students have been teachers in various colleges across the state.
The Department library is working as a part of general library with over 1,000 books. In addition to this, various Journals are being subscribed to keep the students abreast of various developments in the field of Botanical Research. The most prized possession of the library is the 12 volume ‘Horthus Malabaricus’. The Department has a well equipped Laboratory for UG and PG students besides a Biotechnology Lab with advanced facilities. The Department regularly conducts seminars, workshops and exhibitions. The UGC has sanctioned a Minor Project of Rs.1.10 lakhs for the Department. The Department has also been given Rs.80,000 for a State Level Seminar in the year 2011. UGC has also sanctioned Minor Project of Rs. 1,40,000/- during 2013. The department received fund from UGC for National Seminar during the year 2015-16 and from KSCSTE for conducting seminars, student projects, etc. In 2018, the department received a KSBB funded project for Rs. 3,78,000.
The Department also offers a value added course on Mushroom Cultivation for PG and Plant Art and Interiorscaping for UG students. The Department has an Alumni Association and it holds its annual meeting on every second Saturday in the month of December. Late Sri. Perumpulickal Gopinathan Nair (NSS Treasurer) is a famous alumnus of the Department. It also has eminent Professors, Scientists, Doctors, Administrators and public figures as its alumni.
