The Department started functioning with the Pre-University course in the year 1950. The undergraduate degree course was started in 1955 and the postgraduate course in 1998. The department spans over an area of 815 m2 with three classrooms, one UG, two PG labs, One Research Lab and two ICT enabled classrooms. The department library has 1200 books and 10 journals. The department emphasizes on a student-centered approach to teaching and learning which includes, peer teaching, team teaching, supervised study, brain storming sessions, etc. ICT enabled teaching with the help of software like Celestia, Phet, etc. were judiciously used to augment the student’s level of understanding. These softwares can simulate various physics experiments in a virtual environment, which provides fun, interactive, research-based simulations of physical phenomena. This enables students to make connections between real-life and the underlying science, deepening their understanding and appreciation of the physical world. The department regularly conducts interdisciplinary lectures, invited lectures and science movie screening to enrich the knowledge of students. The department consistently produces good results in B.Sc. and M.Sc. courses.
The faculty of the department is actively involved in various research fields such as nanomaterials (powder and film), molecular modeling, non-linear optics, theoretical physics and atmospheric sciences. Among the nine faculty members, six have Ph.D., one have M.Phil. and three are research guides. The faculty regularly publishes articles in peer reviewed journals and in conference proceedings. The PG students are encouraged to publish their M.Sc. project as papers in national journals and also in conference proceedings. The department also offers free consultancy to the students from other institutes for their M.Sc. project work. In the year 2019, the department is upgraded as a Research Department.
