The Department of Political Science is one of the oldest departments in NSS College, Pandalam and has been an epitome of quality education with courses on contemporary topics. The department has produced a range of exemplary scholars and civil servants during its illustrious tenure of 68 years. Though it has Undergraduate courses only, the wide spectrum of activities and subjects included in it makes it outstanding and contemporary. The FYUGP (Four Year Undergraduate Programme) added more diversity to the course by adding distinguished current subjects to the course, and it became immensely relevant and conspicuously contemporary in many respects. Relevant examples in this regard include modules on human rights in India, public policy analysis, new social movements, globalization and political systems, cyber politics, green politics, etc. It is also worth mentioning that the department offers minor courses and multidisciplinary courses on diversified subjects, which have a vital role in absorbing new trends in various fields of political science to develop innovative insights and individual lessons to satisfy the more erudite students of political science.
As a faculty of social sciences, the Department of Political Science lays emphasis on developing students as social scientists, social engineers and nation builders. Its aim is to enhance students' awareness by helping them to participate in various activities, to make them avid readers and creative partners in the process of peer learning and inquiry-based learning. Our association with the Institute of Parliamentary Affairs, Indian Institute of Public Administration and Kerala State Human Rights Commission ensures that the department is dynamic and contemporary and allows students to participate in various activities for a deeper understanding of concepts. The academic performance of students is continuously monitored by the faculty, and continuous efforts are made to improve their skills as per the individual capabilities and talents of the students. Formal remedial training and instruction are provided where appropriate, and ongoing peer education is provided by class group leaders and members of the Student Action Committee (SAC) to keep students up to date on each subject. The dissertation for the third-year graduates is being looked at by the department as a serious venture to inculcate social responsibility among students.
