Geography is the science of our world, and using and sharing geographic knowledge is the key to our future. Geography is the bridge between the human and the physical science and has been called "the world discipline". A study on geography helps to understand the past times and how it has played important roles in the evolution of people, their ideas, places and environments. The land always determines and influences the cuisine, clothing, architecture, social relationships, etc. A study on geography offers rich experience in history and culture and in the evolution of human-land relationship. In modern days, the importance of Geography is increasing as it provides a new perspective into the intermingling effects of globalization and incredible diversities of cultures around the world. In this context, realizing the increasing importance of Geography and its opportunities worldwide, N.S.S.College, Pandalam offers an academic space to aspiring students, introducing a graduate level course in Geography.
The department of Geography, N.S.S. College, Pandalam was established in 2014. The B.Sc. Geography programme offered by the department is excellently charted one, because of the diversity of course which offers core and complimentary courses. The complimentary courses are Geology and Statistics which sanctioned strength as 32.
Geography is a field-oriented course and hence our department undertakes various field programmes such as geographical and geological surveys, resistivity surveys and mapping, field trips, study tours, project works, etc. The department has a well equipped Cartography and Geology museum. This includes Survey of India Topographic sheets of Kerala, Tamilnadu, Karnataka, Gujarat, Punjab and Haryana on 1:250000, 1:50000 and 1:25000 scales. There are number of survey equipments like Chain Survey, Plane table, Dumby levels, Clinometer, Prismatic Compasses, etc. The department acquired modern tool like Areal photographs, mirror stereoscopic, Handheld GPS receivers, Digital data of IRS IA, IRS IB, IRS IC, IRS ID and satellites. The GIS and Digital image Processing free and open software QGIS are procured by the department. Geology museum possess a rich and rare collection of minerals, rocks and fossils. “GEODA”, the department association keeps the academic aspiration alive by holding seminars, invited talks, workshops, exhibitions, etc. The reference library in the department has 120 books in Geography, Geology and Statistics which aid students in research and project works. Department also has an yearly manuscript magazine The Nature that showcases the creative abilities of students.
The department of Geography has launched “Experimental Farming” with the help of students to offer pure and healthy food supplies to the society. This is with an aim to connect education and educational institutes to the society for larger benefits for both.
