The Department of English has been playing a vital role in educating and empowering the students for more than half a century. The department started functioning in 1950 and in 1959, English Language and Literature was introduced at the UG level and five years later, in 1964, the Postgraduate course, M.A. in English Language and Literature was introduced. Our faculty includes 15 permanent teachers. Out of them, three are Ph.D. degree holders, seven are research scholars and four have M. Phil. There is one post for the complementary paper, Sociology.
With the wonderful support of the faculty, the department has produced excellent results, which were always above the pass percentage of the university. The department has bagged University ranks in 3 consecutive years in M.A. English. Many of our former students occupy premier positions in various professional fields. A good number of teachers have become Principals and Pro-Vice Chancellors of different universities. Many have successfully passed various competitive examinations like SET & NET with JRF. To top it all, many of our former students are working as teachers in various colleges and Universities both inside and outside Kerala.
The Department has two on going UGC minor research projects with a plan outlay of Rs. 1,80,000/-. The faculty has published over 30 research articles in peer reviewed national and international journals. Marga a biannual journal with ISSN published by the department focuses on literature, culture and media. The venture aims to promote research activities of teachers and research scholars all over India.
Learning resources of the department includes an extensive library with more than 750 books, over 200 educational DVDs, ICT enabled language lab, internet accessibility, etc. The department has conducted three UGC sponsored national seminars over the years. UGC NET coaching classes are conducted for PG students. A short-term certificate course in Film Appreciation is the highlight of the current academic year.
The department organizes numerous co-curricular and extracurricular activities to enhance the budding creative talents of the students. Lumina Literati, an annual literary festival is organized by the department to instill cognitive and affective skills amoung students. The other activities of the department include Dr. Ayyappa Panicker Memmorial inter collegiate quiz competition, exhibition, invited talk by prominent scholars etc. Mahatma Gandhi Center for Action Research, an extension wing of the department undertakes nature sensitization campaign, the Beautiful Earth that promotes the concept of green earth. Students of the department thus add a competitive advantage to its peer group among the outside community. Department has a fullfledged website www.pgenglishnsspandalam.com.
