For more than half a century, the Department of English has been at the forefront of disseminating high-quality education rooted in humanitarian values, empowering students to envision and work towards a sustainable future. The department, which started functioning in 1950, has been making great strides ever since with the introduction of English Language and Literature at the UG level in 1959 and later, M.A. in English Language and Literature in 1964. Our faculty includes 14 permanent teachers and 1 guest faculty, out of which 6 are research guides, 8 are Ph.D. degree holders, seven are Ph.D. research scholars, and seven M. Phil. degree holders. There is also one permanent faculty member for Sociology.
With the concerted efforts of the faculty, the department has achieved outstanding results over the years, consistently surpassing the university’s pass percentage. The department has bagged several university ranks both at the PG and UG levels including a hat-trick for M.A. English from 2016 to 2018. Students from the department are actively involved in sports and games and have won laurels in various national competitions. Numerous former students hold prestigious positions across various professional fields, including several who have advanced to become Principals and Pro-Vice Chancellors at different universities, and others who have carved a niche for themselves in the Malayalam movie industry and elsewhere. Many alumni have also successfully passed competitive exams like SET, NET, and NET with JRF. Additionally, a significant number of our former students are now serving as educators at colleges and universities, both within Kerala and beyond.
The department has a dynamic mentoring system which provides customised advice and support to students, addressing their individual needs, strengths, and areas for improvement and also a responsive grievance redressal system that ensures that student complaints and issues are addressed impartially, promoting fairness and equity within the institution. The faculty has published close to a 100 research articles in UGC-CARE-listed and peer-reviewed national and international journals.
The department’s learning resources encompass a well-equipped library boasting a collection of over 850 volumes, spanning fiction, non-fiction, and literary theory. Over the years, the department has hosted four UGC-sponsored national seminars, which have garnered active participation from a substantial number of students, scholars, and faculty members from various institutions across India. Additionally, UGC-NET coaching classes are provided for postgraduate students. Multidisciplinary courses offered to I BA FYUGP students titled “Reading Cinema” and “AI and Literary Studies” are the highlights of this academic year. The department also provides a range of gender-focused courses explicitly designed to raise awareness among students about gender disparities and the ways in which these inequalities contribute to the oppression of women.
The department orchestrates a diverse array of co-curricular and extracurricular activities designed to cultivate the nascent creative talents of its students. Preeminent among these initiatives is “Lumina Literati,” an annual literary festival designed to unravel the captivating realm of literature and nurture the histrionic talents of students. Additionally, the department hosts the “Dr. Ayyappa Panicker Memorial Inter-Collegiate Literary Quiz Competition” which draws quizzing enthusiasts from all over Kerala and beyond; literary exhibitions; and lectures delivered by distinguished scholars, cultural programmes of the students. The department has also conducted a webinar series titled “Reading Re-Reading and Reconstructing the Nation (RRR)” to initiate discussions on contemporary discourses in literary and academic arenas as part of the celebration of its diamond jubilee in 2025.
